Redhat Linux is one of the many Linux distributions and one of the few open-source OS project with enterprise class of technical support. Indeed, it’s well backup by many big boys such as IBM, Dell, HP-Compaq, Oracle, etc. Apart from that, a scale-down version of Fedora Core is also selected for well-known One-Laptop-Per-Child project.OLPC is a nice and caring idea of developing $100 laptop (XO-1 or Children’s Machine) for children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to modern form of knowledge and education!
Unlike Windows Vista or its predecessor, you neither need to really pay for a genuine Redhat Linux CD nor you’ll see high-tech hologram printed. Redhat Linux is free-of-charge OS, unless you need to access their technical support or using Redhat Enterprise Linux.
Having say that, you can easily and freely download Redhat Linux CD ISO image from its FTP server. Although, development of the free version Redhat Linux has been discontinued after the release of Redhat Linux 9. Then, it’s Fedora Core – a merger between the Redhat Linux and old Fedora Linux projects in September 2003! Anyway, Redhat Inc (NYSE:RHT) sponsorship is ensuring that Fedora Core will continue available for free download and installation.
As a home user, there might be little or not problem at all by using the most up-to-date Linux distribution, such as Fedora Core 7. However, upgrade is not always an easy job for Linux administrators, who are maintaining legacy application servers running on old Redhat Linux distribution! So, one of the Linux administrator responsibilities is to ensure all the Linux installation CDs or ISO images are securely maintained and regularly backup. If you have lost track of them, you’ll appreciated if someone or somewhere still have a copy for download!
Here are the last resources – the official archive of Redhat Linux CD ISO images available for download from Redhat file servers. Also included are Redhat Linux LiveCD for OLPC project and the latest Fedora Core 7 download links:
This weekend, my website got hacked for the first time ever. I figured it was an event that was bound to happen eventually, but I still felt a bit shocked and more than a little surprised that someone would bother to do such a thing. I was lucky that I had a backup of my website which I had made about a month earlier, and since index.php never really changes unless I make a site design change, I was able to replace the defaced file with my original one, and no harm was done.
Still, it made me realize just how dangerous it is to make such infrequent backups. It also made me realize the extent of the damage that could have occurred if the database itself had got hacked – I could have lost over a month’s worth of blog posts.
Protecting Yourself With Automated WordPress Site Backups
The problem is I just don’t have time to go in every day, week, or even month, and back up my blog. I’m sure most of you reading this feel the same way. There really isn’t a nicely streamlined, automated solution that allows you to schedule a full backup of your files and database, and get the exported backup somewhere off the web server. Aibek listed some online tools that may help, but in those cases you are dependent on some outside service or website to make it all work.
Configuring Automatic Backups
I decided to spend half of my Sunday putting together a solution. The following setup makes use of two scheduling WordPress plugins, WordPress Backup and DB Manager. The first backs up your files, and the second backs up your database – both on a schedule. In the last part of the article, I’ll show you how to automate the FTP transfer of those files onto a remote server or PC.
Your first step is to install the WordPress Backup plugin, taking careful note of the installation instructions and implementing the .htaccess file where required. Then go to the configuration area for it. Here is where you can tell the plugin how often to do a backup of your wordpress uploaded images, theme files and plugins
Make note of the backup directory, you’re going to need this later. The three files stored there will be plugins.zip, uploads.zip and themes.zip.
Next, install the DB Manager plugin. You could also use something like the database plugin Dean described. Pay attent to the .htaccess configuration instructions. Don’t skip the instructions or the backup won’t work properly. Go to the Database Options in your WordPress menu and make a note of the backup path.
There will be multiple files up to the backup archive you define. To FTP these files we’ll have to use wildcards (I’ll show you how).
Set up your database backup on a schedule by changing the Automatic Scheduling settings.
Now that your WordPress files and database will be backed up locally to a location on your web server, it’s time to schedule an FTP job to get those files off the server and onto your local PC.
Scheduling An FTP Transfer
A scheduled FTP transfer is not easy to come by. Most FTP clients that can do it want you to pay for their premium product to do so. To get around this, you need FTP scripting commands that you can schedule, and that’s exactly what WinSCP allows you to do.
Download and run the interactive WinSCP app. Once you’ve established an FTP connection, click on “Session” and save the session.
Once you’ve saved the session details, you can close the application and then open up a text file. Call it anything you like, but remember the name. You will want to type something similar to the following (replace the paths with the paths above that you’ve noted as you set up each plugin).
I created a folder on my local server under D:\backup\TSW_Files where I want to FTP all of those files. Under D:\backup\, I placed the following script file called myfile.txt:
option batch on
option confirm off
get public_html/wp-content/xxxxx/themes.zip d:\backup\TSW_Files\
get public_html/wp-content/xxxxx/uploads.zip d:\backup\TSW_Files\
get public_html/wp-content/xxxxx/plugins.zip d:\backup\TSW_Files\
get public_html/wp-content/xxxxxxx-db/*topsec6_topwp.sql.gz d:\backup\TSW_Files\
The first path in the “get” command is your remote web server path, and the second path is your local backup PC/server path. Next, create a text batch job called backupWP.bat and store it in the c:\program files\WinSCP\ folder. That text file should have the following lines:
The myfile.txt script can really be stored anywhere, so long as you keep the path listed in the batch job accurate.
Now, whenever the batch job launches, it will call WinSCP.com, which will in turn run the FTP script commands you defined in your txt file. All you have to do now is schedule backupWP.bat to run using Windows Scheduler (All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Windows Scheduler).
Now, you’ve basically set up a system where your WordPress block takes regular backups of important WordPress files and the WordPress database to folders on your web server, and you can FTP those backed-up files off your server to a remote location using your daily FTP script.
So, there you have it. Once you’ve set up the system above, you never have to give backing up your blog another thought. Automating the entire process will free you up to do more important things, like writing your first novel, or playing with your kids. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Try the setup above with your own blog and let us know if you were able to make any improvements in the setup, or if you know of any plugins that work as well as these two for a WordPress site backup. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
Backing up your data is one of those things in life that you really won’t understand until disaster strikes, by which time it’s too late. For most people who haven’t experienced data-loss, the task of backing up just seems like such a good idea in theory, but so much effort in reality.
But take my advice, use this incredible free Easeus Todo Backup software and it’ll be so easy you won’t even have to think about it. And if the worst does come to the worst, and you do lose any data, then you will be covered.
Types Of Backup
There are 2 basic types of backup you can do with Todo Backup, so first take a moment to think about your requirements.
File & Folder Backup
This is the simplest form of backup there is, and basically just makes a copy of files. These kind of basic backups are suitable when your documents or data are the most important thing, but you don’t care about your operating system or the applications installed on it. As you have a fine control over what to backup, the size of your backup is determined by your data only. However, once you’ve taken a full backup, you can run “incremental backups” subsequently, which only backs up the files that have changed. This saves space and time, while still giving you an up to date copy of files should the worst happen.
Partition & Drive Backup
This can save a copy of your entire computer, including the operating system. It’s the best choice if your computer is your primary work machine and getting it up and running again quickly is important, or if you have a lot of applications installed that you don’t want to lose. With a full partition and drive backup, you can simply change the broken drive and restore everything back to it in a few hours. Of course, these kind of backups will take longer to perform, and they include everything on that partition, so they tend to grow large. You can reduce the size with compression though.
Easeus Todo Backup
This handles both of these effortlessly, and allows you to make a bootable restore CD or USB. One point to bear in mind is that while you can backup to a shared network drive (like one of the awesome drobos we gave away last week), you cannot restore from one. If you want to be able to restore your whole system, you must backup to a physical device plugged into the computer, such as another internal drive (see my guide to adding another internal drive) or a USB hard drive.
Automated, No Effort Backups
Automation is the key to back-ups. If you have to actually launch some software every time you want to update the backup, then believe me after the first time you never actually will.
To see how the software really performs, I decided to do a full system backup of my Windows machine. The whole system is only about 10GB as it’s primarily for work. To test the restore capabilities, I’ll delete a bunch of random critical Windows files to simulate a system error, then change the drive, and attempt to restore from the backup using a bootable CD made using the Easeus software.
To start, I chose Schedule Backup -> Disk and partition backup, and gave it a name. When it comes to choosing what to backup, I made sure to select only the main Windows drive as I already had the backup drive plugged in. I then chose the backup drive E: as the destination – the USB drive I had plugged in. Be sure to check the box “Check Backup Integrity“, or there is a possibility that your backup will be corrupt. I chose a Daily backup at 8:45pm, and made sure to enter my administrator account password.
While that was running, I went ahead and made a bootable rescue USB key from the tools menu.
Make sure you don’t choose your backup drive if that’s also plugged in through USB. The process only took a few seconds. I then waited for the backup to finish, which according to the log took less than 10 minutes.
Curiously, the backup image was only about 5GB – I checked later and by default a basic amount of compression is applied. Less compression will make the backups quicker but larger, more will take longer but result in a smaller file. Regardless, I went ahead and deleted random files (don’t try this at home) until it refused to boot Windows, then unplugged the main drive and installed a new one. Just to complicate things, I replaced the original drive with a smaller one. I then booted from the USB drive. With the USB backup drive plugged in, it automatically recognized it and found the backup image, and soon enough I was choosing the drive I wanted to restore the system to.
You can even resize the partitions during the restore process. 10 minutes later, Windows was back up and running. Fantastic!
Even if Easeus Todo Backup wasn’t free, it would still be one of the best backup solutions for Windows. It is free though – and with features otherwise only found in expensive packages, it’s also incredibly simple to set up a regular automated full backup plan. If you don’t already have a decent backup solution in place, I strongly suggest you download this now. There are also full guides on the site for every type of backup operation you could want.
Again, here’s that download link for this incredible piece of software. Let us know your experiences in the comments if you’re a current user – or what backup software you use instead?
Easily make a copy of your entire hard drive . Don’t just back up your data: back up all of your software, your settings and everything else by cloning your entire hard drive. Redo Backup makes cloning your system easy, but also gives you access to file recovery and a variety of other tools. You can even browse the web while everything’s happening.
We’ve shown you the magic of live CDs more than once; we even wrote a handy live CD manual. So it should come as no surprise that we’ve already shown you Clonezilla, a live CD for cloning the entirety of your hard drive. This tool is great for cloning drives, but does not come with a GUI and includes a lot of cryptic language.
Enter Redo Backup, a user-friendly live CD that makes cloning or restoring your entire drive simple. Tell the program where you’d like your cloned drive to be and you’re pretty much set.
Backing Up, Backing Up…
Boot up Redo and you’ll see two simple buttons:
f backing up or restoring is what you have in mind, these are the buttons to press. Once you’ve established the drive you’d like to copy, you can pick a destination:
You can save your clone to another hard drive on your computer, another computer on your network or a USB drive; it’s up to you. You can restore your backup at any time by using the CD again.
But Wait, There’s More…
Redo is primarily a backup tool, but it can do more than that. Click the gear button at the bottom-right and you’ll find a small menu. Browsing reveals these tools:
You can use the Disk Utility to check on the health of your drives. The file recovery tool can help you recover deleted files, while the partition editor lets you add, remove or change the size of our partitions. The usage analyzer is a great way to visually examine what’s taking up space on your hard drive.
All these tools combine to make Redo Backup an amazing tool for working with filesystems. The disk’s accessories help a little more:
The web browser is the coolest thing, giving you access to the Internet while your computer backs up. A file manager, image viewer, terminal and text editor round things out.
Need more software? Don’t worry; you’ve got full access to the Ubuntu repositories. Check out the “Administration” menu to find Synaptic, or use the Terminal, and install the tools you need.

Ready to get started with Redo? Download it now. Once you have the ISO file you’ll need to burn it to disk. Linux users can simply right-click the file to find the option to burn the ISO to disk. Windows users will need Infrarecorder or a similar tool.
If we taught you well, you will know the importance of backing up. This tool makes backing up the entirety of your hard drive simple, and for that I’m grateful.
How do you like this tool? Feel free to leave praises or complaints in the comments below, along with any questions. I’ll be around.
Microsoft is slated to release Visual Studio 2012 and .NET Framework 4.5 on Wednesday, providing developers with the final tools for building Windows 8 applications. The tooling comes roughly two months prior to October 26, the general availability date of the Windows 8 operating system, according to Microsoft.
The company is altering its standard procedure of first dibs for MSDN subscribers and instead, making the Visual Studio 2012 tooling available to all developers on August 15. MSDN subscribers will, however, gain access to the Windows 8 RTM on Wednesday.
Windows 8, which was released to manufacturing at the beginning of August, will be available so that MSDN developers can build and finalize applications. (That does not include Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 for ARM-based tablets, according to Microsoft.) The company is also planning to release the Windows 8 RTM to TechNet subscribers on Wednesday so that IT professionals can begin testing the new operating system.
On tap for general release tomorrow are the final versions of Visual Studio 2012, .NET Framework 4.5, Visual Studio 2012 Team Foundation Server and the Visual Studio 2012 Software Developer Kit. The free Visual Studio Express 2012 tools for Windows 8 (metro-style apps) and the Web will also be available.
The free Express tools for Windows Desktop (originally dropped from the lineup and added after developers balked) and Windows Phone are expected later this fall, according to Microsoft Corporate Vice President S. Somasegar, who heads the Developer Division.
Visual Studio 2012 supports Office 2013 and Windows Phone 8 development but the tooling for the upcoming Office and the Windows Phone platforms is not part of the August 15th downloads, according to Jason Zander, Microsoft corporate vice president of the Visual Studio team. A preview of the Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012 was released last month when the company officially introduced Office 2013 along with the new Cloud App Model for extensibility across client applications and the Web in Office and SharePoint 2013.
Microsoft is also promoting a Visual Studio 2012 Virtual Launch Event that will be streamed live for developers worldwide. Somasegar and Zander are hosting the event. It’s scheduled for September 12; the same day that Apple is rumored to be launching iPhone 5 and other products.
It’s important to note that Visual Studio 2012 requires .NET 4.5, which is an in-place upgrade. Some developers are reporting potential issues with “Targeting .NET 4″ and bug fixes in .NET 4.5 that could cause problems in applications that run on Windows XP, for example.
After releasing Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton Anti-Theft, and Norton 360 products for Microsoft’s newest version of Windows, Symantec Corporation has now released a free app named Norton Satellite for Windows 8 and is now available in the Store.
Norton Satellite helps you scan your Facebook feed for malicious links, scans your Dropbox to identify unsafe files, and also scan external storage device for malware.
Norton Satellite doesn’t work as a substitute for your existing Windows Defender or any other third-party antivirus software. It just helps you better protect your cloud account.
The best thing about the app is its easy-to-use user interface. Just launch the app, enter your Facebook or Dropbox details to begin scanning your account.
The downside of the app is that it doesn’t scan all file types and doesn’t help you remove all types of viruses. The current version of the app scans only.exe, .dll, and .msi files. So, as we said before, this is no substitute for any antivirus program. The current version of the app doesn’t include support for SkyDrive or Google Drive. However, you can scan your local SkyDrive or Google Drive folder using scan a folder feature.
Besides, it can also scan individual files (.exe, .dll, and .msi). The app quickly connects to the Symantec servers and completes the scan in a few seconds. Overall, it’s a pretty good app for Windows 8. Users can use this app to scan downloaded applications.
Visit the Store and install this free app if you want to scan your Facebook feed and Dropbox account. If you’re looking for a free antivirus program for Windows 8, we recommend you check out Avast Free, Panda Cloud Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free 2013 programs.
To install the app, open the download link (provided at the end of this article) in your Firefox or Internet Explorer browser, click View in Store button and then click Install button to start installing the app. To uninstall, simply right-click on the app and then click Uninstall option that appears at the lower bottom of the screen.
You might also like to install All My Storage, a free app to access SkyDrive and Dropbox from one place.
